This February
Have a Heart for the Hungry
That’s the theme for GPC’s first–ever campaign to generate substantial monetary contributions to the Mid-South Food Bank. Throughout the month, the Mission Committee is urging members of this congregation to donate dollars to stretch the Food Bank’s ability to address hunger through more than 300 charitable feeding programs in 31 counties. The goal is $15,000, an amount the Food Bank can turn into 30,000 meals.
“When a person uses his own $1 at the grocery store, he can buy $1 worth of food to give us,” explains Cobi Gray from the Food Bank. “When he gives that $1 to the Food Bank, we can, through our contracts with food brokers, purchase $4.23 of food. Or put another way, we can feed a family of four a whole meal for $2.”
Estelle Mayhue-Greer, CEO at the Food Bank, will describe the hunger condition in this region during the “minute for mission” at worship Jan. 29. Information will be displayed during the coffee fellowship between services.
The campaign against hunger launches the following Sunday, Feb. 5, when GPC youth will conduct their annual “Souper Bowl” collection following worship services. Those proceeds benefit the Soup Kitchen and MIFA.
During February, the church will accept checks made payable to “GPC” with “Food Bank” written on the memo line in the lower left corner. Information will be available about pledging and giving through bank checking accounts or assignment to credit cards.
The fund drive does not replace GPC’s monthly collection of food donations. In February, children will be encouraged to bring jars of peanut butter, currently the single most needed foodstuff at the Food Bank.
The Mission Committee will offer ideas for greater awareness and response to the needs of the hungry, including a hands-on opportunity Saturday morning, March 3. GPC members age 15 years and older can volunteer to sort and package foodstuffs at the Food Bank warehouse from 9 a.m. to noon; youth ages 10 to 15 can participate if accompanied by an adult. Sign up forms will be available in February.
Souper Bowl of Caring helps young people across America develop a stronger connection to their communities by caring for their
neighbors in need. Join the movement that is transforming Super Bowl weekend into the nation's largest celebration of giving and serving.
Collect your loose change, the folding type as well, and bring it all to church on February 5 for the special offering being collected by the youth of GPC for the Souper Bowl of Caring. The collection goes to the MidSouth Food Bank as well as MIFA to help those in need within our local community.

GPC’s Annual Youth Auction will take place the evening of Sunday, February 26. The event will include a spaghetti dinner, wonderful entertainment, and an auction filled with fabulous merchandise such as fishing trips, vacation getaways, and your very own personal parking space at GPC. Tickets will go on sale February 1 and space is limited. This event supports our youth summer ministry program. Please consider donating items and or services such as hosted dinners, event tickets, and / or anything that could be auctioned. Donations will be accepted in the church office. For answers to your donations questions, please contact Carolee Carlin. If you have any auction questions, please contact Jill Crocker or any youth for more details.
If you have donated in the past or would like to donate for the first time, please contact Jill Crocker, 624-7906, for more information.
