Charles Marshall Webster

“Pastor Charlie” began his ministry with us in April 2010 and this is his fifteenth interim pastorate (in eleven states). He came to us from First Presbyterian Church in New Canaan, CT where his ministry was described as “high energy, enthusiastic, warm, caring, accessible, an organizer’s organizer, and theologically grounded.” Charlie feels his primary calling to be a pastor with people of all ages and backgrounds and that God has truly called him to serve Germantown Presbyterian Church in an exciting time of transition.

His journey of faith began in the home of Scottish Presbyterian immigrant parents who first taught him “God is love and Jesus is my friend.” Charlie says, “I believe that the Christian gospel is the most liberating message in the world. In believing that I maintain that Christ offers resurrection and forgiveness in community that is the most generous and inclusive culture we can imagine. As Jesus is God’s love personified, the Church is God’s love organized, which means that a Christian congregation does not exist for itself but for the world with both a local and international mission. As a follower of Jesus, it is not my belief that I invite Jesus into my life so that I may become eligible to go to heaven when I die, but to say ‘yes’ to Jesus’ invitation into his life, so that my life may be transformed and conformed to his in a relationship that is for eternity.”

Charlie received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Duke, his Master of Divinity degree from Princeton, and had a fellowship at the University of Edinburgh as well as doctoral studies at McCormick in Chicago. He served nine years as the organizing pastor of a Presbyterian congregation in San Jose, CA preceding his “interim callings” and has served the greater Church in numerous leadership roles on presbytery, synod and General Assembly committees.

Charlie and his wonderful wife (Mimi) live in Germantown. He has three delightful daughters, two great sons-in-law, and two adorable grandchildren (who all live in the San Francisco Bay area). You can reach Charlie at charliew@germantownpres.org.
